The Freedom Sings 1969 show at The Bluebird Cafe last night (10/21/09 was wonderful. Got to sit with some of my favorite people, John and Maureen Organ, eat a Prime Rib sandwich with Sweet Potato Fries, and then hear some great music. Don Henry kicked it off with Games People Play, backed up by the whole band including Dave Pomeroy, Craig Krampf, Danny Flowers and Bill Lloyd, as musical director. Some acts played solo, or at least stripped down, like A. J. Croce on Yesterme, Yesteryou, Yesterday from Stevie Wonder. Mark Volman of the Turtles did a passionate Jim Morrison cover, Danny Flowers channeled Jimi Hendrix, Beth Nielsen Chapman sang Sly Stone, and Jonell capped off the evening with a raucous version of Put A Little Love in Your Heart. Erika Wollam and the staff of the Bluebird are keeping the place going well. Nice new back door, after an unsuccessful break-in. Elliott Duke was dealing with the frozen AC system, so I felt right at home.
Thanks to Ken Paulson and the First Amendment Center for a wonderful night.
